Antemate vs Tricount

Two free ways to split the bill. Here is the difference.

Tricount is free, popular and good at what it does, and it is the right choice for a lot of people. This page says when, and says what Antemate does differently — without pretending the other app is worse than it is.

Planned against actual for the Lisbon trip: spent so far against the budget, the daily rate, and each category against its plan.

Where Antemate is the better pick

  • It is not attached to a bank. Tricount is made by bunq and offers a bunq card that adds your spending to a tricount. Antemate is made by a company that does not sell a bank account, and never asks you to open one.
  • Every currency at the rate from the day it happened, so a debt agreed on Tuesday is the same number on Friday, and each person reads it in their own currency.
  • Planned against actual on a trip: a budget, or a trip planned in Yanvara, measured against real spending day by day while you are still away. (Pro.)
  • A photographed bill becomes a split, line by line, for you to check before it is saved — and a menu in a language you do not read comes back in yours. (Pro; 3 scans free to try.)
  • Six ways to split and several payers on one bill, with an edit history under every expense that cannot be deleted.
Settle up: the fewest payments that clear the group, each with a Mark as paid button.

Where Tricount is the better pick

  • It has no paid tier at all. Tricount's store listing says "no subscription, no hidden fees". Antemate's ledger is free too, but it does sell Pro for four features that cost money to run. If you never want to be offered anything, Tricount is the cleaner answer.
  • Getting paid back, inside the app. Tricount sends payment requests from the app and, by its own description, lets you get paid straight to your bank account. Antemate never moves money: it tells you who owes whom and points you at the payment app you already use.
  • More of your friends already have it. Tricount says it is "trusted by 21 million people across the world". Antemate is new, and lets you add people by name so nobody is blocked — which is not the same as everyone already being there.
  • If you bank with bunq, the card adding your purchases to a tricount by itself saves typing every expense in.

The Tricount column is taken from Tricount's own App Store listing and website, checked on 23 September 2026. "Not listed" means Tricount does not describe the feature — not that it cannot do it. Apps change; if this is out of date, tell us and we will correct it.

Switching

What people ask when they compare the two.

Is Antemate a good Tricount alternative?

If you want the same free, unlimited ledger without a bank attached to it — plus exchange rates held from the day each expense happened, and on Pro, receipt scanning, menu translation and a trip budget measured against real spending — yes. If you want no paid tier to exist at all, or to be paid back inside the app, Tricount is the better pick.

Is Tricount really free?

Tricount's App Store listing says it is free and unlimited, with no subscription and no hidden fees, at the time of writing. Antemate's ledger is also free with no daily limit; Pro is optional.

Does Antemate send payments like Tricount?

No, on purpose. Antemate never holds or moves money. It shows who owes whom and the fewest payments that settle the group, and you pay in whatever app you already use.

Do my friends need to move from Tricount?

No. Add them in Antemate by name and their shares count from the first expense. They can install it whenever they like, or never.
