Antemate vs Settle Up

No ads between you and the bill. And where Settle Up wins.

Settle Up is a long-standing, well-rated group expense app, and for some groups it is the better choice — it has a web view Antemate does not, and a Premium bought once for a whole group. The biggest difference on the free plan is ads.

Totals for the Lisbon trip: a donut chart of where the money went by category, the group total, your share, and who has been fronting things.

Where Antemate is the better pick

  • No ads on the free plan. Settle Up's free version carries ads, and removing them is part of its Premium. Antemate shows none, on any plan.
  • Rent on a schedule, free. Repeating expenses — weekly, fortnightly, monthly or yearly — are on the free plan; on Settle Up they are part of Premium.
  • Where the money went, free. Totals by category and who has been fronting things are on the free plan, and so is exporting a group as a PDF statement or a CSV; on Settle Up, statistics and Excel export are part of Premium.
  • The rate from the day, not today's. Settle Up describes real-time exchange rates; Antemate holds each expense at the rate from the day it happened, so an old debt does not move with the market.
  • A bill scanned into a split, line by line, and a menu translated with the original to point at. (Pro; 3 scans free to try.)
  • Planned against actual on a trip, day by day, while you are still away. (Pro.)
The Lisbon group: what you are owed in a header in the group's own colour with a Settle up button and everyone's faces, then every expense with the faces of who shared it and what you lent or borrowed on each.

Where Settle Up is the better pick

  • Friends can look without the app. Settle Up lets you share a group link so people can see the balance in a browser. Antemate has no web view; the website has no ledger in it.
  • One purchase for the whole group. Settle Up sells Premium per group as well as per person. Antemate Pro is always one person's, and never unlocks anything for the rest.

What people ask when they compare the two.

Is Antemate a good Settle Up alternative?

If ads on the free plan are what you want to leave behind, yes: Antemate shows none, and its totals by category are free. Recurring expenses are free here too. If your group needs a browser view for friends without the app, Settle Up does that and Antemate does not yet.

Does Settle Up have ads?

Its free version does, at the time of writing, and removing them is part of Settle Up Premium. Antemate has no ads on any plan.

Can Antemate add rent automatically every month?

Yes, on the free plan. Set how often it repeats when you add it, and it lands on its day split the same way. On Settle Up, recurring expenses are part of Premium at the time of writing.

Do my friends need to move from Settle Up?

No. Add them in Antemate by name and their shares count from the first expense. They can install it whenever they like, or never.
